About this course

Celebrating Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, this unique and exciting themed one-week summer workshop will provide a platform of inspiration and enable you to create your very own jewellery collection.

Sea, skies, surf and sunshine will inspire designs and fossils will spark the design process. Then after experimentation with different techniques, your very own jewellery collection will be born!

At the start of the course, you'll be introduced to the 3D and jewellery workshop that's fully equipped for you to explore many different and exciting jewellery-making techniques. Following this, you'll undertake design development and explore how to bring together a full collection of jewellery.

Throughout the week, you'll be introduced to and given the opportunity to experiment with various processes, including soldering, texturing metal, enamelling, granulation, keum-boo (an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of gold to silver, to make silver-gilt) and fold forming. All these processes will provide the backdrop for the creation of an experimental body of work inspired by the textures and landscape of the local environment.

You'll also explore the use of various non-precious metals and silver. Likewise, you'll be introduced to stone setting; both cabochon and flush setting will embellish your designs if so desired.

You'll be expertly taught by Kathryn Arbon, who has 30 years of experience in designing, making, and teaching jewellery at different levels. Kathryn has a breadth of experience within the field of jewellery-making, from bespoke design to the study of gemmology, so you'll be learning from the best.

In addition to course teaching hours, you'll be able to access our maker workshops in the early evenings to continue working on your creative pieces, if you wish.

The Jurassic Coast is one of the UK's four Natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Stretching 95 miles along the south coast of the UK, within Dorset and Devon, it's recognised for its outstanding rocks, fossils and landforms. Unsurprisingly it attracts millions of visitors from all over the world each year, to take in its unique history and character.

It's the only place on the planet where rocks from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods can be seen in one place, representing 185 million years of Earth’s history.

The rocks of the Jurassic Coast conceal untold stories of continents colliding, landscapes being formed by the tide and extraordinary creatures living, dying and evolving across millions of years.

It was on the Lyme Regis coast that fossil-hunter Mary Anning discovered the UK's first dinosaur fossil – the ichthyosaur – in 1811.

As well as fossils and unique rock formations, the Jurassic Coast is home to some of the UK's stand-out, iconic natural landmarks, including Old Harry Rocks, Durdle Door, and Lulworth Cove.

It's no wonder that the rich geological history of the Jurassic Coast serves as ideal inspiration for artists across the world.
