About this course

This course is perfect if you have a passion for historical millinery and wish to explore the processes involved, or have an interest in creating something very different, but with a British twist. It'll allow you to expand your knowledge of historical techniques, specific millinery materials and release your own creativity.

Based on British cultural identity this exciting workshop has been specially designed to provide you with the opportunity to create historically correct and/or themed hats and head pieces.

You'll be shown how to use a variety of specialist millinery materials and techniques. Combining traditional practices based on cultural identity, you'll create your own unique and inspiring hat pieces.

Your tutor, Chloe Scrivener, possesses many years’ experience of working in the millinery industry, and will guide you through the techniques in an easy-to-understand fashion. You'll learn and develop the skills to allow you to investigate, experiment and create your own unique hat pieces.

This highly practical course will consist of talks, practical demonstrations, inspiration into planning your designs, and support you throughout with professional guidance and direction from your tutor. This will all enable you to successfully construct and accomplish your self-designed final pieces.

Your final pieces will consist of working with felt, straw and buckram. You'll also learn how to select and use trimmings appropriate to ‘dress’ your hats.

  • An introduction into the world of British millinery through history to the present day, including research of British milliners and other areas for inspiration
  • An introduction to creating a mood board of inspiration and identifying your target customer
  • Sketching to develop your design, including colour choices and fabric samples
  • Practical demonstrations of different millinery materials (felt, straw and buckram)
  • Practical demonstrations of different millinery techniques (proportions, edges, wiring, and finishes)
  • An introduction to trims and trimmings (feathers, flowers and fabric)
  • Finalising designs using fashion illustration to create a mini hat collection
  • Creation of mini hat collection (between two and three finished hats/headpieces)
  • Take part in an educational trip to London to visit Millinery suppliers/fabric shops and a museum for inspiration and to gain a deeper appreciation for historical millinery

All students with 100% course attendance will be issued with an official AUB Summer Course certificate of attendance. You'll receive this at the end of your course.

On your last day there'll be an exhibition of the work created on the course; celebrate your achievements and those of your fellow milliners.

The Summer Courses team invite you to attend an optional farewell meal at a local restaurant. A perfect conclusion to your creative week where new friendships and skills shall be celebrated.

After this course you could:

  • Use your new skills to further your career or change direction
