This course will introduce you to and lead you through the entire garden and landscape design process from start to finish. Along the way, you'll explore the variety of skills needed to carry out designing for external spaces, including technical aspects such as planting plans and designs, scale drawing, and colour rendering.

The course starts with an overview of the role of the garden and landscape designer and how to approach a site. You'll be introduced to the design process step by step, from discussing a design brief, site survey, site analysis, functional layout plans, concept plans, colour rendering, mood boards, 3D representation (section drawings and physical scale models), specification documents and drawings, planting design, planting plans, lighting design, lighting plans, maintenance plans. Scale drawing and scale model making will also be utilised.

Throughout the course you'll explore each of the stages of design in more detail through discussion and interactive practical exercises; developing a design for a site (this could be your own garden or a space that you know or an example site on campus)

In addition to campus-based activities, you'll visit several gardens to fully appreciate and benefit from detailed guided tours of designed spaces, discussing and critically analysing the venues and how space is used to the best effect.

You'll present your designs to the group with drawings, mood boards and physical scale models or digitally with a PowerPoint presentation.

In addition to course teaching hours, you'll be able to access our maker workshops in the early evenings to continue working on your creative pieces, if you wish.
