About this course

This exciting unique summer workshop has been specially designed to provide you with the opportunity to create original, alternative, and inspiring pieces of artwork. Using sycamore wood as the canvas and combining the alternative applications of pyrography and oil painting, you'll create outstanding and distinctive pieces of artwork.

This course is suitable for anyone with a passion for art, illustration, design, painting, and those wishing to explore alternative artistic processes. This course is ideal if you have an interest in creating a unique art piece and like to explore and experiment to release your creativity.

You'll be introduced to the art of pyrography, also known as 'wood-burning', and receive demonstrations of the art of burning elaborate patterns onto specially selected wood using heated etching tools.

You'll learn the essential skills and techniques in producing an array of effects that pyrography offers, before complementing and enhancing your art pieces by applying oil-based paints in aesthetically pleasing designs that emphasise and complement the completed pieces.

Your tutor, Tilia Holmes, will demonstrate the tools and essential techniques that allow you to investigate, experiment and combine both traditional and alternative practices to create contemporary pieces of artwork.

This highly practical course will consist of talks, practical demonstrations, planning your design, and you'll be supported throughout with professional guidance and direction from your tutor. This will enable you to successfully accomplish your final pieces, which will consist of pyrography, lacquering and the final oil painting layer to highlight specific areas.

In addition to course teaching hours, you'll be able to access our maker workshops in the early evenings to continue working on your creative pieces, if you wish.
