About this course

This introductory and engaging workshop offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself from the outset in the world of figurative clay sculpture and to be taught all the essential and fundamental processes to create a visually appealing body of work.

With access to our dedicated maker workshops, you'll receive informative talks, demonstrations, and direction in the tried and tested approaches of sculpture, enabling you to create highly accurate and realistically proportioned figures, where the processes, once learned and practised, can be repeated and applied to all future designs.

Using air-drying clay, you'll be introduced to the classical rules of proportion, design and anatomy. These newfound skills will then be consolidated and applied to your final creation. The course will follow a natural progression building on the practise of skills and techniques.

You'll be expertly led every step of the way by your tutor, Julia Carter, who possesses many years of experience in the field of sculpture creation.

In addition to course teaching hours, you'll be able to access our maker workshops in the early evenings to continue working on your creative pieces, if you wish.

  • Sketching
  • Observation of pose
  • Measuring proportion, design, and anatomy
  • Interpreting gesture
  • Anatomical pointers
  • Refining and rendering
  • Use of specialist tools and techniques; how to use them safely and effectively
