Historically Inspired Millinery

Do you have an interest in millinery and want to learn how to make your own? This course will introduce the materials and techniques for making flat pattern hats inspired by historical shapes.

The first hat will be a pillbox style hat, where the possibilities for fabrics and trimmings are endless. A pillbox can be a range of sizes and worn in different positions on the head, the shape was an iconic style of the 1960’s, and yet remains popular today.

The second hat is a miniature top hat inspired by the 19th century ladies riding hats. This can be modern or traditional – from a silk covered 19th century recreation to a very 21st century steam punk themed hat! The choice is yours.

Both these hats basic shapes can be covered in your choice of top fabric and trimmed in any way you choose.

Through tutor-led demonstrations, you will be able to use these techniques for your own creations to take away and wear.

You do not need any millinery experience to join this course just a desire to put on your creative hat.

A basic sewing kit including scissors, hand sewing needles, pins, thread, tape measure, pliers, and a pencil. An apron to protect clothing.

You will need to purchase some specialist materials to complete your hats as advised by the tutor.
