Biography

After graduating in 1981 I was a freelance photographer latterly in Bristol until 1990 when I became Photographer in Residence at Whitchurch Psychiatric Hospital, Cardiff for South East Wales Arts. From this point I began to focus on two areas of my practice, lecturing and gallery/publication based fine art photographic  practice. My MA completed in 1998 helped me to consolidate these areas and developed a further specialist interest in “The Artists Book” as it relates to Documentary Photographic practice. Since moving to Swanage in 2000 I have worked within the School for Prep HE at AUB, formerly as Pathway Leader Photography, latterly as Head of School.

Professional practice

My teaching practice has mainly been based at FE level primarily working with Foundation Art and Design students. I helped set up the Foundation Media programme at AUB a more specialized programme of study for photographers and film makers. I was also involved in developing a Year 0 course at The Arts University and the new Arts, Design & Media with English course. My PGCE gained in 2004 helped me in these roles. In my current role as Head of School I co-ordinate all activities within the school, and sit on several AUB committees.

Research Specialism

My current practice and associated research concerns the landscape, natural history and its (mis)representation explored within the context of Fine Art Landscape Photography. It draws on research into the primitive romantic and sublime landscape and is aimed at a Gallery market and towards Fine Art publications. Sites of natural history are identified and examined over long periods of time. These have included a Rookery, Cobwebs, Nature Walks and Trails and more widely the Urban Wilderness.
