The Documentary Pathway of the MA Film Production course is an intensive practice-based course led by International Emmy award-winning Jonathan Lewis, one of the country’s leading documentary filmmakers.

A programme of film exercises, targeting a range of creative, technical, content and stylistic issues, supplements and feeds into each term’s core film project.

Viewings, seminars, tutorials, research and written work will also help prepare you for the production process, from concept to screen.

The commissions and industry contacts you’ll make will enable you to learn to think and work to rigorous professional standards.

Originality, self-motivation, vision and application are rewarded with an immersive, challenging experience, allowing students to find their feet and their unique voices as documentary filmmakers.

What Current students think

The documentary MA at the AUB has given me the chance to develop and enhance my skills as a filmmaker in a very intimate environment.

As part of a small seminar group, I am able to discuss and develop my ideas. I receive feedback and guidance from both our very experienced documentary tutor, Jonathan Lewis, and my classmates.

A series of documentary exercises has allowed me to gain essential practical experience. Beyond documentary, the course structure offers me the invaluable opportunity to collaborate with other Masters pathways and work on fiction productions.”

“The course is intense and challenging as well as practical and effective. It is rewarding to see the progress of my work, project after project.

We have regular meetings in small groups, and our personal projects are supported with valuable discussions and feedback at all stages.

I feel privileged to be under the guidance of such an experienced Documentary Director as my film tutor.”
