Course details

This 1-day workshop will give you the basics of silver jewellery making as well as an introduction to the tools involved in this fascinating craft. You will get hands on experience of Delft Sand clay casting in the making of your pendant and will be taught through practical demonstrations, group and individual tuition.

Casting is a very exciting technique with endless possibilities and is a great way to cast pieces with very little cost and little equipment. Your tutor, Yvette Cannon, is a trained and experienced silversmith who has run her own business and continues to supply galleries, shops and private clients.

Students will be guided through the basic principles of preparing the item and the mould, melting of the silver, use of a soldering torch, cleaning and polishing the finished piece and by the end of the course you will be able to wear your own made pendant.

  • Understanding the process
  • Making the item ready to cast
  • Setting up the casting flask
  • Melting and pouring the silver
  • Soldering jump rings etc
  • Cleaning, polishing and finishing the pendant
  • Welcome tea/coffee and pastries a.m.
  • Free ‘Buffet’ style lunch

The workshop aims to give jewellery makers of all levels the skills and confidence to be able to practice sand casting on your own at home at a hobbyist level. It also will give you as much autonomy as possible in terms of design.

The goal is to give each student a comprehensive overview, understanding and hands on practical experience of the casting process. This one-day workshop should give you the confidence to purchase your own sand clay casting kit which you should be able to use at home.

The course is suitable for those new to jewellery making as well as people who have already completed a beginners silversmithing course, as this will be a useful add on skill.

You should wear old clothes or an apron and flat, closed toe shoes.

Your glasses if need for close work and a hairband if you have long hair!

All course materials will be supplied and you will just need to bring along small items to be cast (the size of a 50pp). Please wear closed shoes in the workshop and close fitting sleeves are also recommended. Please make sure that your hair is tied back and no long jewellery worn. An apron is optional.
