Sally Hope

Principal Lecturer and Course Leader

Sally has presented papers both nationally and internationally in relation to her type expertise. Sally is also a member of International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) and has been a panel member of the ISTD student awards scheme.

Richard Hurst

Senior Lecturer

During his MA in Graphic Design, Rich investigated the notion of Tension through Force Dynamics – a branch of cognitive linguistics. Through this investigation he explored the use of metaphors and semiotics to express forces, which culminated into a typeface and interactive installation using Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo.

Rich’s practice involves working across a range of projects, and includes the production of iOS Applications, CMS / HTML Websites, 3D and 2D Animations, Touch Screen interfaces right through to brand identities and printed publications.

Hannah Byles

Senior Lecturer

Hannah completed her MA in Communication design, which focused on the unspoken word and how we communicate through gestures and paralanguage. Her research Interest continues to be in the format and sequence of books and experimental binding techniques and structures. On completion of a Graduate Diploma in Bookbinding and Book Conservation she works on bespoke projects and teaches bookbinding across various subjects.

With a keen interest in Letterpress and the use of letterpress within contemporary design, exploration is focused on developing the letterpress facilities within the course, cataloguing the typefaces and constructing new typeface collections. This will conclude by undertaking collaborative projects in this subject area.

Sarah James

Senior Lecturer

Sarah studied 3D Design (glass and ceramics) before working commercially designing and making stained glass. She works illustratively on small scale three dimensional pieces inspired by absurdity and humour. Sarah has taught across sectors until specialising in theoretical and contextual studies in Fashion, Illustration and Visual Communication. She is deeply interested in the relationship between art and design practice and its contribution to the development of concepts and intellectual rigor.

Laura Walker

Lecturer

Laura studied Visual Communication at university before embarking on a career within the creative industries at a variety of award-winning design and advertising agencies, working as a Designer and most recently, progressing to Art Director.

She has produced work for a range of national and international clients, such as Unilever Food Solutions, Samsung, The Telegraph, Audible.co.uk, Sunseeker and also many charities, including The NSPCC, Plan UK, RNIB, The RNLI and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
