AUB celebrated the 80th birthday of acclaimed English architect and Honorary Fellow of the University, Professor Sir Peter Cook RA, in its new multi award-winning Drawing Studio yesterday, designed by the Royal Academician himself.
The event, consisting of a lecture and drinks reception, honoured Professor Sir Peter Cook RA and his contribution to architecture and teaching throughout his career. The Drawing Studio at AUB is the first of its kind to have been built in the country for 100 years and is Professor Sir Peter Cook’s only building in the UK.
BA (Hons) Modelmaking alumus, Thomas Hughes, graduated in 2015.
He has since gone on to work at Pinewood studios, creating weapons & props in the armoury department for films such as Assassin’s Creed.
￼Earlier this year, students at AUB worked hard to recreate the original model of one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks, following a commission from Lord Norman Foster.
￼Seven Second Year students on AUB’s BA (Hons) Modelmaking course were tasked by Lord Foster to build a replica of the original model of the Reichstag dome for The Norman Foster Foundation. The dome was designed by Lord Foster in 1993 to symbolise the reunification of Germany and the original ￼model was lost.
Phyllida and Nic were commissioned to build a bespoke installation for the new Mexican-inspired healthy eatery by co-owners Trevor Hill and JJ Adams, after making the door handles for the restaurant.
The AUBSU Thank You awards recognises those particular staff members who go above and beyond their roles at AUB.
Students had the opportunity to nominate staff as their chosen ‘thank you’, along with a reason why they deserve to win. This year we had over 60 nominations with 37 staff members being nominated.
The new building has three floors, including a set of shared workshop rooms on the ground floor for the individual creative processes that are an integral part of both courses. Special Make-Up Effects Designer and Honorary Fellow, Nick, is a multi award-winning artist with over thirty years experience in the film industry.
Armoury Modeller, Tom Hughes, who graduated from BA (Hons) Modelmaking in 2015, made the papers this week for the replica Iron Age shield that he created for a museum in Lincoln.
The project was part of Tom’s final year project, when students pursue a design brief from an external client. Tom approached The Collection in Lincoln about any upcoming opportunities.
After graduating in 2004, Alex worked as an architectural model maker for 8 years, before moving back to Bournemouth and inventing Boot Bananas alongside her partner Phil in 2012.
BA (Hons) Modelmaking students have won multiple awards at this year’s New Blades show.
The final year students showcased their work at the annual model makers recruitment fair, where they received eight out of the eleven awards. The work on display ranged from a hand carved Viking throne, to a lumberjack with 15 eyebrow expressions.

In 2014, students from BA (Hons) Acting, Costume and Performance Design, Modelmaking, Make-up for Media and Performance collaborated with Kokoro — the BSO’s new music group on a performance of Joan Littlewood’s ‘Oh What A Lovely War’.
