Sara Taylor

Course Leader and Principal Lecturer

Sara’s professional portfolio of design work includes Wig Mistress (make up, hair and wig design) for London’s west end productions and major repertory and international production companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Sara has extensive experience in touring theatre and is an experienced wig maker for film, television, theatre and for private clients.

She has over 15 years’ experience in Higher Education and her research explores identity, physiognomy and characterisation through the art of make-up transformation.

Carolyne Hinds

Senior Lecturer

Carolyne joined AUB in September 2013, with extensive experience in Education and Cert Ed (PCET) following on from running a BA (Hons) and Fda in Media Make-up as Programme Manager.

Carolyne is an accomplished and recognised Make-up Designer with vast knowledge of professional practice in makeup and hair design for screen.

Designer credits include ‘Jayne Eyre’, ‘Sherlock Holme’s, ‘Red Dwarf’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Desmonds’ (TV), ‘Life is Sweet’, ‘Hidden Agenda’ (Film), Kodak, Heinz (Commercials) and Hello Magazine.

Laura Cotterill

Lecturer

Laura joined AUB in January 2014, having nine years freelance experience in the makeup industry.

Laura has extensive experience working in Fashion, Editorial, Commercial and Television make-up, however her skill base also covers multiple disciplines, which has been supported by her FdA in Media Makeup. Clients include ITV, Nickelodeon, ASOS, Loaded Magazine and the Clothes Show Live. Laura continues to work as a freelance make-up artist within the editorial and commercial discipline alongside her professional practice at AUB.

Prior to Laura’’s appointment, she worked as Visiting Lecturer teaching on a variety of units and since then has worked alongside Short Courses, facilitating the annual Makeup Summer School and evening courses alike; Laura’’s research interests include hair politics, specialising in Afro hair.

Dr. Jon Croose

Lecturer — Contextual Study

PhD, MA, Certificate in Newspaper Journalism, BA (Hons) (University of Kent at Canterbury)

Jon’’s academic background is in Theatre, Performance and Cultural Studies.

His inter-disciplinary PhD thesis The Practices of Carnival: Community, Culture and Place (University of Exeter), brought together Performance Studies, Performance Anthropology and Cultural Geography approaches, in order to re-think arts-participation and arts-development within notions of the ‘cultural economy’.

Jon’’s role as Lecturer in Contextual Study at AUB involves undergraduate teaching, assessment and course management for the university’’s BA degree courses in Costume with Performance Design and Make Up for Film, Media and Performance.

Kathrine Auger-fisher

Lecturer

Kat who has worked for the BBC, ITV, Cosmo and OK magazine has extensive and varied experience of freelance work within the make-up artist industry and continues to work as a freelance make-up artist within editorial, commercial and bridal work specialising in airbrushing techniques.

Kat is a qualified teacher (Cert Ed) and course managed a number of different make-up courses before joining AUB in September 2012.

As well as a Technical Demonstrator Kat also works as a Visiting Lecturer teaching on a variety of units such as; Fundamental Studies, Fantasy and Contemporary Transformation and History and Reality.

Kat also delivers the three-week Make-up Summer School at AUB.

Wayne Humphrey

Lecturer

Wayne comes from an Art and Design background, having completed a HND in Graphic Design.

Wayne’’s has 12 years’ experience working for clients such as Dorset Orthopaedics and Ortho Europe, where he specialised in making hyper-realistic, high definition silicone prosthetic covers for amputees.

Wayne also worked as a commercial freelance sculptor and an airbrush artist. Credits include ‘The Grendal Toots’, winner of Best Film at the Exeter Phoenix Film Festival December 2013.

Wayne also runs an evening class in Z Brush for AUB.

Alison Hart

Senior Technician

Alison has a degree in Fashion and Textile Design from Leicester De Montfort University and a PGCE in Higher Education completed since joining AUB.

Having spent many years as a Technician within the BA Costume and Performance Design course, with a specialism in the Dye Room working with the students dyeing and printing fabrics and breaking down costumes for performances; Alison has progressed to Senior Technician working with both the BA Costume and Performance Design and BA Make-Up for Media and Performance courses.

Julia Carter

Technician Demonstrator

Julia has had a varied career in the Arts, and has taught sculpture and life drawing as a visiting lecturer in further education and at AUB.

In 2003 she completed a BA (Hons) degree in Modelmaking and came to the university to work in the studio / workshops, specialising in mould making, facilitating students with technical advice and techniques.

This varied skills based background transfers to make-up, for the making and application of prosthetics, understanding and using materials involved in the process. Julia also teaches the Sculpture and Introduction to Prosthetics on short courses, at AUB.

Sophie Monro

Sophie completed a BA (Hons) degree in Photographic Art before turning her attentions to make-up and undertaking a VTCT course in Theatrical & Media Make-up.

She has experience in theatre, film and photographic make-up work and is enjoying the challenge of working on the BA (Hons) Makeup course at AUB.

Kelly Monks

Technician Demonstrator

Whilst specialising in sculpture, mould making, colouring and application of prosthetic pieces, Kelly is competently trained in all aspects of makeup within the contexts of film, television and theatre.

After completing an Fda in Art and Design in 2012, Kelly went on to earn her BA in Make-up for Media and Performance in 2015, graduating with First Class Honours.

Her professional career thus far has consisted of working as a freelance make-up artist for bridal and beauty as well as spending some time at studios such as Kristyan Mallett Makeup Effects and The Twins FX.

Kelly’s credits include Fortitude Season Two and the multi-award winning feature length film, A Reason to Leave.

Gabrielle Main

Technician Demonstrator

Having graduated from the BA (Hons) Make-up for Media and Performance at AUB, Gaby found a passion for Wig Making and postiche.

She spent her three years specialising in knotting wigs and postiche, wefting and constructing handmade foundations using traditional and contemporary techniques. She also cut and styled her creations.

During her time studying, Gaby has assisted doing make-up on numerous photoshoots, fashion shows and theatrical performances and has spent time at The Twins FX making props for theatre which included techniques such as airbrushing, de-moulding, seaming and prepping moulds for casting.

Gaby has 15 years experience in theatre as a principal dancer for a local dance company, where she also supervised the younger dancers’ hair, make-up and outfits. She has also spent over three years working in a fabric shop, building an extensive knowledge of materials, costume making and pattern construction.

Before beginning her position as a Technical Demonstrator, Gaby worked freelance, creating hand-made wigs, hair pieces and hair extensions for clients.
