Dr. Fausto Sanna

Dr Fausto Sanna obtained his master’s degree in Architecture, summa cum laude, from the University of Genoa, in 2007. He fully qualified as an architect in Italy, in 2009.

He received a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from Edinburgh Napier University in 2014. In the same year, he obtained professional recognition as an academic practitioner, was appointed Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and received the Learning, Teaching and Assessing Award from the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA).

In 2018, Fausto was awarded a PhD at Edinburgh Napier University, with a thesis on the environmental performance of timber architecture.

Since 2008, Fausto has taught in Italy, Scotland and England, and, for brief periods, in Finland, Hungary and Austria. He joined the Arts University Bournemouth, as a Senior Lecturer in Architecture, in 2015. He teaches architectural design and technology, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels (ARB/RIBA Parts 1 and 2).

Fausto strongly believes in an interdisciplinary approach to architecture and his teaching interests mostly reside in architectural design and technology.

He has taught at Genoa University (2008-2011) and Edinburgh Napier University (2011-2015) before joining the Arts University Bournemouth (2015). During his time at Edinburgh Napier, Fausto also taught on an Erasmus Intensive Programme entitled Innovative Use of Wood in Construction, which took place in three host universities in Finland (2012), Hungary (2013) and Austria (2014).

Most of Fausto’s research revolves around timber architecture.

He researches into the thermal performance and environmental impact of different timber-based constructional techniques employed for low-rise buildings.

The study of the thermal performance is conducted through testing and modelling of full-scale building elements.

The environmental impact is carried out by means of life-cycle assessment (LCA) techniques.

His previous research activity has included the rehabilitation of historic timber structures, the European and Italian legislation on public works and the internationalisation of the curriculum in higher education.
