Biography

Dr Colin Perry is course leader for Art & Design History at AUB. He is an art historian, critic and editor. His writing on art appears regularly in magazines including Art Monthly, Frieze and ArtAgenda. He has a PhD from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Before joining Arts University Bournemouth he taught at universities including Central Saint Martins and Westminster University, London.

Dr Perry is interested in how art relates to different publics, cultures of spectating and theories of voice. His interests range from histories of visual spectacle in the nineteenth century to contemporary video and documentary art. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Moving Image Review and Art Journal (MIRAJ) and Critical Studies in Television. Recent academic publications include a chapter in Other Cinemas (I.B. Taurus, 2017) on the influence of the German playwright Bertolt Brecht in 1970s Britain. Dr Perry is currently writing a single-authored book on radical film, television and video culture in Britain in the 1970s and ’80s.

Colin has worked with a range of major arts institutions including Tate, Hayward and Camden Art Centre. His writing appears in numerous volumes such as Vitamin P3 (2016) on contemporary painting, and Vitamin C (2017) on ceramics. He is the editor of a number of major publications including Biennials and Beyond: Exhibitions that Made Art History: 1962-2002 (Bruce Alshuler, 2013).

Research Specialism

Dr Perry’s academic research has been published in peer-reviewed journals including the Moving Image Review and Art Journal (MIRAJ) and Critical Studies in Television. Recent academic publications include a chapter on the influence of Bertolt Brecht in the 1970s in Other Cinemas (I.B. Taurus, 2017). He is currently writing a single-authored book on radical culture in Britain in the 1970s and ’80s.
