BA Textiles 2010 Graduate Karen Heslop was selected at Liberty of Londons, Best of British design open call 2011.

Karen took with her a selection of her graduate work , which was largely inspired by her visits to Kew and other botanical gardens.  Two of her designs ‘wild flower’ and ‘pagoda’ were selected by the Head of Home and Interiors, and then later produced as cushions to be sold in store.

Karen says; ‘The open call was an excellent experience for a new designer, talking to buyers really opens up your eyes to how design works in the real world. I originally took my designs made up as scarves and showed them to the fashion team, but the managing director Ed Burstell suggested my designs would be more suited to interiors and asked me to return in two weeks with cushions, which I did. Supplying such an iconic store was a huge learning curve for me and proved to be excellent experience, the key thing I learned from the experience is never set yourself in stone for where you perceive your designs to be – be flexible!’
