Jonny Hoskins, Senior Lecturer for the BA (Hons) Acting course, worked as Movement Director for Croatian stage production, A Je To!, a co-production between Nu:Write Theatre Festival Zagreb and Trešnja.

Last month, the show had it’s final season performance at Trešnja City Theater in Zagreb, Croatia, though there are hopes it will move to a new location in Zagreb soon.

A Je To! has been a big success, playing to sell-out audiences. It was also nominated for a Croatian Theatre Award in 2016, for best acting performance in puppet shows or play for children and young people

Jonny Hoskins had this to say about his time on the production:

‘[The production] is an adaptation, without dialogue, of a Czech and Czechoslovak animation, A Je To! (Pat and Mat in English) which was very popular on TV in Croatia as well as Holland, the Czech Republic, and other locations acround the world.

… My challenge was to adapt the stop-motion animation so that the audience would recognise the character movement of the original. But we also had to break free from the screen of a TV, and so we used a healthy degree of clowning technique, which broke the fourth wall and drew the audience into the piece.’

A Je To! follows the plights of two friends facing self-made problems, doing everything they can to solve them. Each episode ends with the two friends shaking hands in a distinctive style.
