BA (Hons) Illustration Visiting Tutor, Richard Allen, has won the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year title in the UK’s most prestigious annual illustration competition: the V&A Illustration Award.

Richard won the award for his piece Trump Wave, produced for the Sunday Telegraph.

Speaking about his work and influences, Richard said:

“All sorts of things beyond illustration inspire my work – films, books and fine art, although with illustration these stimuli are less obvious.

“Trump Wave was a commissioned piece from a newspaper – the Sunday Telegraph’s Money section cover. In the week of Trump’s election I was charged with providing an image that suggested a mood of uncertainty and looming dramatic ramifications without being too polemical. I submitted two possible roughs and pursued the one that had perhaps the most charged composition – referencing as it does the exquisitely poised Hokusai wave image.

“The V&A Awards are highly prestigious; being shortlisted and winning was an enormous honour.”
