Renowned fashion expert Hilary Alexander visited Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) on Monday to cast her expert eye over student collections as part of a judging panel that selected the best AUB fashion designs to appear on the catwalk at London Graduate Fashion Week (GFW) in June.
Hilary Alexander has been at the forefront of the fashion industry for over 30 years, working as Fashion Editor at the Daily Telegraph for 19 years, before becoming their Fashion Director in 2003. She has styled fashion shoots all over the world, reviewed hundreds of catwalk shows every season, interviewed fashion’s biggest celebrities, and has now received a glimpse of AUB’s fashion designers of the future.
For the past nine years, BA (Hons) Fashion Studies students have exhibited their designs on the catwalk at Graduate Fashion Week (GFW). This year, AUB student’s creations are opening the event, with the very first catwalk show on Sunday 2nd June. Prior to GFW, the AUB student collections undergo a rigorous assessment by a panel of judges to decide which collections will be exhibiting on the catwalk – and this year, Hilary Alexander was invited to be Guest Judge on the panel. She commented “Thanks for a brilliant time in Bournemouth. It was great to see the students’ work – and you have some really good gems there! I look forward to seeing them at GFW.”
Last year, AUB student collections were nominated for several awards at GFW. Student Ke Li was nominated for the prestigious George Gold Award for her womenswear collection, Ellis Currie received a nomination in the Mulberry Accessories Award, Rebekah Mills received a nomination in the Fashion Innovation Award and the whole team were nominated for the Best Stand Design at GFW. This year, with expert advice from Hilary, the students hope to emulate, and even surpass the success of their peers from 2012.
BA (Hons) Fashion Studies Course Leader Anne Chaisty commented “It was great honour for the students to have Hilary Alexander review their fashion collections. Not only did it give them experience of promoting their designs to a panel of industry judges, but it also gave them the chance to have their collection reviewed by someone who knows the fashion industry inside out. We are very grateful that Hilary was able to spend the day on the judging panel at AUB.”
