Sian Hutchings, BA (Hons) Fine Art alumna and Graduate in Residence, has been shortlisted for the National Platform Award.

Sian is one of five graduates around the UK that have been shortlisted for the award. De Le Warr Pavilion, MK Gallery, Aspex Gallery, Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary all selected one artist.

Platform is a coalition of visual arts organisations in the South East, consisting of Margate’s Turner Contemporary, Portsmouth’s Aspex, Brighton’s De La Warr Pavilion, Milton Keynes’ MK Gallery and Oxford’s Modern Art Oxford, and has been initiated by CVAN (Contemporary Visual Art Network South East).

Each organisation has selected graduates from within their immediate geographical reach for their exhibitions. One Platform artist from each gallery will be put forward to be considered for the Platform Graduate Award 2016, receiving a £2500 bursary and a year of mentoring from international artist Jonathan Parsons.

Sian was selected, alongside fellow AUB graduate Leandro Alenfel, by Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex Gallery, to participate in a group show. 12 graduates were selected from arts universities around the South.

Sian performed her graduate work The Composition of Sway, at Aspex Gallery’s had a private view of the Platform show. Her work features Sian conducting five musicians she has worked with over a series of ‘sonic workshops’.

Sian said: “The Composition of Sway and my practice in general, aims to highlight how we can understand environments through listening.”

From this exhibition, Sian was then selected to represent Aspex Gallery and AUB and attend an interview in at Jerwood Space in London, in front of a panel of judges consisting of directors from the participating galleries.

Joanne Bushnell of Aspex said: “Sian’s performance, The Composition of Sway, was stunning and it was a real privilege to see it live at the preview”

The winner of the award will be announced on the 7th December at The Turner Contemporary in Margate.
