Design for Disaster looks at natural disasters, the survivors and creating a small-scale shelter set within the context and aftermath. This unit was undertaken by 42 first year students who looked at earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, flooding, cyclones and hurricanes. They had 8 weeks to learn about the disaster, location, culture and lifestyle of the residents, their requirements in the aftermath of a disaster and how to design and build a temporary shelter, many of which looked at sustainability and local materials and construction techniques. They designed, developed, drew up and modelled their final designs, here are some of the models:
