Designed by architect Professor Sir Peter Cook RA, and officially opened by Dame Zaha Hadid, AUB’s Drawing Studio will be hosting its first exhibition this month.
Opening today, the Drawing Studio’s first installation will showcase work by internationally renowned Director, Scenographer, Curator and Educator, Professor Pamela Howard OBE.
Pamela Howard is a Director and Scenographer working primarily in opera and contemporary music theatre. Her practice encompasses large and small scale productions, in major opera houses and unloved and forgotten spaces.
A passionate advocate of drawing, Pamela created this installation in response to the Drawing Studio. Pamela begins her creative process with a pen or pencil and draws her way to the first night, using her individual drawing skills as a tool to communicate her ideas and vision to her performers and creative team.
The installation focuses on six recent works with music, including The Greek Passion, The Marriage and Pamela’s critically acclaimed interpretation of Bizet’s opera Carmen for the Ljubljana Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet.
The installation is curated by Rebecca Pride, Principal Lecturer and Course Leader in BA (Hons) Costume and Performance Design at AUB, and co-curated by Sam Edwards, Technician Demonstrator for the Faculty of Media and Performance at the University.
Rebecca Pride commented: “We are delighted to have this installation of Pamela Howard’s work on display in AUB’s new Drawing Studio. Pamela is a keen observer of human life and always carries her pencil and sketch book with her to make sketches and notes on ‘People in Space’.
“The skill of drawing is central to many of the courses taught at AUB and Pamela embodies and advocates for this philosophy beautifully.”
Sustainability and imaginative use of space are central to Pamela’s work. A full career as a Director/Scenographer, with a love of text and context, has led her to develop a scenographic language of beauty and simplicity on stage.
Pamela Howard is the author of What is Scenography? a book that has become a classic text in contemporary performance practice. She is a Visiting Professor at AUB.
To open the exhibition, TheGallery at AUB will host a panel discussion about the installation today from 5.15pm to 6.15pm, before the formal opening of the installation at 6.15pm by Principal and Vice Chancellor of AUB, Professor Stuart Bartholomew CBE.
Chaired by Curator, Rebecca Pride, the panel will include Pamela Howard, Professor Sir Peter Cook RA and Rocc, Artistic Director, National Opera Lubljana, Slovenia and respected Director/Scenographer himself.
Booking for this event is essential as spaces are limited.
