Charlotte Hawkins, a level 6 BA (Hons) Makeup for Media and Performance student took part in the annual competition “The Art of Body Painting” 2015. The competition was held at Olympia in London and saw body painting enthusiasts take to the stage.
Charlotte’s flair for body painting has been evident throughout her time at the AUB. However during a seminar with visiting tutor Julia Townend, Charlotte learnt about the annual event, and decided to enter the competition.
Upon entry, Charlotte was given a theme, “Alice in Wonderland”, chosen to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the timeless publication by Lewis Carroll. Charlotte described the theme as being able to, “ adapt well into the world of Body Painting and offers extensive interpretation of each character detailed in this exquisite book”.
During the design stages, Charlotte wanted to choose a character that may not have been recreated before. The caterpillar with his Indian influence, gave great scope for creativity.
Charlotte took inspiration from bold colours, henna design and used a clever technique to give the illusion of the caterpillar smoking a shisha pipe.
It took Charlotte months of preparation and practice makeups to refine the design. All the hard work paid off with Charlotte, coming 2nd place. Charlotte received a crown brush set, body painting glitters and makeup for her kit.
The final images look spectacular, well done!
