BA (Hons) Commercial Photography graduate, Sam Dearden, has work included in the Tate Lates series.

Uniqlo Tate Lates takes place the last Friday of every month ‘after hours’. The gallery puts on a series of exhibitions, workshops, films and music at night. Sam’s work, Muhammad, was featured after the gallery contacted him via Instagram.

Speaking about his work, Sam said: “The image of Muhammad is a part of a larger project I have been photographing across the West Bank since I graduated, documenting the skate scene. I initially volunteered with a charity, Skatepal, that builds skateparks across the West Bank. Whilst I was there, it became apparent that this was a type of narrative in Palestine that isn’t particularly visible to most outside of the West Bank.

“I didn’t expect to be getting a DM from the Tate on Instagram, and I very nearly wasn’t in the show because I didn’t see that was how they contacted me. It was surreal being selected by someone like the Tate to have an image as a part of a show!

“I’m predominantly focused on making a book of the work along side a couple of group shows at the moment.”
