Throughout 2018, the BA (Hons) Animation Production course is running a series of guest lectures for Level 6 students, as part of the ‘Professional Development’ unit.
First in the series was Freelance Producer and Co-Director of Animate Projects, Abigail Addison. On 13th February, students gathered to learn about networking, self-marketing and the independent production landscape within the animation industry.
A VARIED ROLE
Addison’s agency, Animate Projects, works in partnership with universities, museums and other large organisations including Channel 4. Addison’s role is split between creative and corporate responsibilities, which entails overseeing scripts and budgeting.
Addison shared her industry knowledge on everything from commissions to funding. She discussed the opportunities open to artists through universities, charities and other organisations, highlighting that animation is becoming an increasingly popular medium.
She went on to stress the importance of keeping your website portfolio and Vimeo channel updated, to show you are ‘actively creative’. And the opportunities available through film festivals and residencies, which are a great way to connect with the community.
In addition to having a creative eye, Addison discussed the traits required to be a successful Producer – “[you] have to be organised, very good at communicating.”
