Arts University Bournemouth have been selected to represent the Best of Graduate Fashion Week at the Houses of Parliament on 5th November.

The event will showcase 6 collections in total, with AUB being represented by BA (Hons) Fashion graduate, Poppy Russell.

Poppy made it through to the Gala Event at GFW 2015 with her menswear collection. She switched up the catwalk routine with Northern soul dancer, Lauren Fitzpatrick, who will also be included in the Best of GFW. Her collection will include four outfits.

Poppy spoke to us about her time at AUB:

“I studied the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (for which I was awarded Best in Pathway) as well as my degree course at AUB and graduated with a First Class Honours in Fashion Design. I began my degree as a womenswear designer but switched to menswear at the end of first year because I found my design style suited that discipline better and found the challenge of menswear very exciting.

I completed my placement module as an intern at Vivienne Westwood, assisting the Gold Label design team. My time was split between the studio, where I assisted in tasks including pattern cutting and sewing toiles, and the archive, where I worked on photo-shoots and helped with styling and celebrity dressing. This experience reinforced my professional work ethic and I returned to the final year of my course determined to produce a body of work I would be proud of.

For my collection, I took great inspiration from British subcultures; particularly in and around Brixton post World War II. I studied magazines and street and club photography from this era, helping my work to have authentic references yet still work as a contemporary piece of design.

Creating a collection was hugely demanding yet rewarding; it was shown at Graduate Fashion Week and then chosen to be showcased at the Gala Award Show. It received great press and the response was a really encouraging start to my career. The Times described my collection as the ‘talk and social media buzz of the weekend’, and I am now looking forward to my collection appearing at the Houses of Parliament on the 5th of November.”
