Eastern and Western cultures collide in film The Turtle and The Sea – which has just won AUB senior lecturer on the BA (Hons) Film Production course, Marek Budzynski a Best Director award.

The Turtle and The Sea follows the story of a Chinese Kung Fu master who travels to England to try and raise money for his mother’s heart operation. He falls in love with a British singer. Against a backdrop of deep cultural divisions and the violence of inner city Birmingham, they find themselves in a race against time to save his mother’s life, and their own.

The film is based on a true story, between singer, Lena Jones, (played by Cat Goscovitch,) and Kung Fu master, Jai Zheng (played by Shifu Yan Lei.) The Turtle and The Sea features his astonishing ‘Steel Jacket’ technique, and some stunningly shot and brutal fight scenes from one of the world’s greatest exponents of Shaolin fighting.

BA (Hons) Film Production course Senior Lecturer, Marek was announced as the winner of the Best Director in the Feature Film Category at the Buddha International Film Festival in Pune, India.

He said: “The film won a prize at Birmingham International Film Festival in 2016. Almost two years later it was part of the official selection in the Buddha International Film Festival in Pune, India.

“I was absolutely thrilled to win the Best Director Feature Film Category last weekend. We put so much of our hearts into the making of the film that to get recognition makes all the hard work over the last few years worth every minute of our time. We’re now exploring an Indian distribution deal and next stop is selling it to China.”
