BA (Hons) Textiles student, Chloe Farrington, completes two week placement with Kate Westcott.

“I recently completed a two-week placement working alongside Kate Westcott in her home studio based in Bath, specialising in hand printed fabrics for interior products.

It was a great experience for me as I got to be a part of the whole design process. Some of my roles included fabric cutting, shopping for supplies, drawing, colour mixing and matching, machine sewing, and packaging the products for sale. My favourite role was screen printing onto fabric I hadn’t printed on before and using different techniques, as well as helping to create all the products Kate sells. It was very exciting!

I loved working for a small textile company as it meant that I was contributing in a big way. The experience also gave me a good understanding of what it is like to run a business from your home and be self-employed.

At the end of my placement I got the opportunity to go to a local fair with Kate, where I helped set up her stall and sell her products. This placement has given me confidence to take any opportunities that come my way, as well as pushing me to achieve my aspirations for the future.”
