Wolfgang Tillmans gives guest lecture

BA (Hons) Commercial Photography / Photography Alumni Course news / Industry news / Inspire – Published 20th Mar 17

Wolfgang Tillmans, critically acclaimed Photographer and AUB alumnus, recently visited the University to give a guest lecture to students.

The lecture is part of the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography Guest Speaker programme, which includes speakers from a variety of areas within the creative industries, including set designers, art directors, picture editors, agents, stylists and photographers from a variety of genres.

Tillmans attended Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design in the early 1990s. His work has been published in magazines such as i-d and Vogue and he is the first photographer to have won the Turner Prize.

During the talk, he shared photographs with students explaining his intentions for each and the result. These ranged from some of his earliest shots taken as a student in Bournemouth, to later photographs that have been exhibited around the world.

He spoke to students about reading surfaces in the manmade world and analysing what they reveal, emphasising the importance of questioning everything and not just accepting the world as it is.

Ha advised students to “trust your eye, but also change your position” – to believe in what you are photographing, but also to interrogate subject matter.

After the lecture, Tillmans held a Q&A session for a group of 25 students in the Photography Hub, giving them the opportunity to ask him any questions.

Tillmans is currently exhibiting at the Tate Modern in London. The exhibition brings together his photographs, video, digital slide projections, publications, curatorial projects and recorded music.
