Arts University Bournemouth has become an official partner of National Writing Day.

Described as ‘a celebration of writing creatively’, National Writing Day is a collaborative initiative between First Story and partner arts and literacy organisations across the UK. It is supported by Arts Council England and Old Possum’s Practical Trust.

BA (Hons) Creative Writing Lecturer, Dr. James Cole worked with local schools, as well as the Young Writers Group of the Lighthouse Theatre and the AUB SU Writing Society.

He said: “Becoming an official partner for National Writing Day is an exciting prospect for AUB where narrative and storytelling is at the heart of so many courses. We are joining some of the UK’s leading literature and arts organisations including The Royal Society of Literature and The National Literacy Trust, as well as world-renowned authors including Michael Morpurgo and Michael Rosen, to help create resources and run events celebrating the written word.”

AUB led various events rolling out a week-long series of writing workshops across primary and secondary schools in Dorset and Hampshire to celebrate the day on Wednesday 21st June. The first National Writing Day was considered a great success, with an overwhelming response across the country.

”It’s times like these that remind me of the power of writing – I’ve been humbled, awed, and moved in equal measures by the responses of those who took part.  I worked with over 140 pupils, all of whom wrote with such beautiful honesty and unbridled imagination.  Thanks to all the schools that took part.  I can’t wait for next year!” – Dr. James Cole.

The next National Writing Day will take place on Wednesday 27th June 2018.
