BA (Hons) Commercial Photography alumna, Adama Jalloh, ventured backstage for i-D at the ‘Black Panther’ UK premiere last week to photograph the cast in monochrome majesty.

An assignment for i-D, the BJP Breakthrough Awards winner captured the ‘Black Panther’ cast, which included actors Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright and Martin Freeman, dressed in sharp suits and glittering gowns.

Commenting on the shoot for i-D, Jalloh said:

‘Shooting at the Black Panther Premiere came about through being contacted by Hattie Collins, who works as features editor at i-D. They liked how I’d shot portraits for them at Afropunk last year, so they wanted me to shoot at the premiere. Being able to photograph the director as well as some of the cast members will definitely remain as a highlight for me.’

Adama Jalloh won ‘Undergraduate single image’ at the British Journal of Photography Breakthrough Awards in 2015, and has exhibited at the Tate Modern and Royal Festival Hall. Favouring a black and white photography style, Jalloh’s striking images have strong themes of identity, ethnicity and culture at their core, and she often documents her own family and community.

When asked about the projects she chooses, she said:

‘In terms of choosing themes for projects like race, culture and identity, I realised there are so many things currently going on around me in London that need to be documented and shown. I especially feel that certain aspects of communities and people tend to be disregarded.’
