The Employability & Enterprise Week – a week of lectures and workshops designed to help the AUB students plan their creative career was organized from 19th March to 23rd March 2018.
The week-long session ranged widely from advice on intellectual property, pricing your work and starting your own business, to guidance on setting up a social enterprise or getting into publishing, to suit the requirements of all students coming from varied creative sectors.
I attended three main sessions throughout the week and they all seemed to prove immensely motivating and substantial in increasing my understanding of the working and financials of the creative industry.
On 19th March 2018, a session on ‘Roadmap to Online Business’ was conducted by Cat Rose Neligan, the founder of TheCreativeIntrovert.com, who basically focused on how to Plan and Promote your Online Business. Being a creative introvert herself, she shared her journey of setting up a successful running online business and inspired us to introspect and reflect over the aspects which could help us get our work the exposure it deserves and help us build a thriving creative business through some small and effective action steps.
Following this, on 21st March 2018, Patricia van den Akker (Director of The Design Trust), held two back-to-back workshops on ‘Costing and Pricing’ and ‘How to identify and approach potential clients and employers’.
The first session basically focused on the numerous aspects of costing and pricing prevalent in the creative industry and touched down upon some basic questions such as why costing & pricing is so tricky, how to calculate the hourly rate, how to cost a product/service in 7 steps, pricing terminology & calculations etc.
The second session revolved around identifying the pros and cons of being employed vs self-employed and reflecting on our inner strengths and weaknesses to accordingly choose the best option.
The workshops were highly interactive and also encouraged us to engage in conversations with our peers and find solutions amongst ourselves by undertaking activities like designing a creative ad for ourselves and listing the companies or brands that we aspire to work for in the future.
