By Laura Franx – BA Illustration
This is a three panel vector illustration I made in collaboration with a colleague on my course, Megan Park. This piece was a competition entry for the D&AD New Blood awards. The brief consisted in designing up to 3 images for a Hotel Indigo of your choice, inspiring your piece in the neighbourhood of your chosen location.
We chose Hotel Indigo Nashville, focusing primarily on the musical and neon aspect of the place. We decided to combine elements of the city with elements of the hotel, creating an isometric map of the building. We included the most prominent venues which represented Nashville, such as the Grand Ole Opry or the AT&T building, as well as literally taking parts of the hotel’s furniture and architecture.
Despite the varying presence of outline in the drawing, the juxtaposition of our styles lent itself well for a consistent final resolution. This consistency was mainly achieved by establishing a set perspective, a limited colour palette and demonstrating an evident awareness of light all the way through the images. The colour palette we opted for was a combination of jean-like blues and sunset reds, which to us were iconic of Nashville.
The images were all made in illustrator with exception of the neon elements which we made in Photoshop, allowing the piece to be enlarged without loosing detail. The illustrations would work either printed as a banner or digitally, uploaded to the Hotel’s website. The purpose of this piece was to promote Hotel Indigo Nashville as a hotel in sync with its vibrant and enchanting neighbourhood, which offers curious travellers a beautiful and comfortable stay
The process of collaborating although challenging, was incredibly rewarding and to our belief, successful and I will definitely be open to take on more collaborations in the future.
