These images are part of a collaborative project which is currently in the means of production with 4 other course mates. The project arose after the five of us attended the Pictoplasma festival in Berlin this May. The convention consisted of a compact schedule of animation screenings, talks and workshops. We were so inspired by this experience we decided to create an animation narrating our trip with the intention of submitting it for next year’s festival.
As the five of us work in very different styles we decided to combine all the styles together rather than agreeing on one way of working. We set out weekly deadlines where we agree to make certain parts of the animation in our chosen style. We also decided we would represent ourselves as characters, with uniform characteristics across the five different styles.
For my part, I decided to work in 3D, creating a low poly world with digitally drawn textures. I was inspired by the 3D character artist Danette Beatty (who we saw in Pictoplasma) and wanted to make simple game-like characters like she does. The 3D software I used was Blender and I used Illustrator to make the textures for the face and some of the clothes. I wanted my characters to be naïve and sweet looking in order to reinforce the positivity of the journey.
My next steps are to finish my characters by making all the different facial expressions and rigging them. Once we are able to animate the characters into a simple walk cycle we will start making the world which they are going to roam around. The world will be our view of Berlin and will hopefully communicate the exciting and stimulating experience we lived, so much so it gets chosen to be screened next year!
