AUB 24 turns AUB into an advertising and communications agency for 24 hours…

Small, multi-disciplinary teams of students work on a real brief, with a real client and the opportunity to produce real work.

On Tuesday 11th March, creative students from Arts University Bournemouth (AUB) spent 24 hours working on a live brief for Bridport Arts Centre’s ‘From Page to Screen’ Festival in a project called AUB Twenty Four.

The project follows on from AUB’s recent Alumni success as part of the on-campus Framestore team that worked on Gravity which has picked up a string of awards, including an Oscar for ‘Best Visual Effects’.

The brief was to create a short film adaption to be screened at the festival of an article from that morning’s Guardian – concerning the monocle as the latest made-up fashion trend:

24 hours later the teams returned to screen their work to the panel of judges including Framestore’s Carlos Ciudad (Visual Effects Co-ordinator on RoboCop and upcoming Paddington).

Carlos said: “The process was really interesting, it’s good how the students from different courses put the best of their skills together to achieve some great work within 24 hours. It’s good to see the talent coming through at AUB and for Framestore to collaborate with the University – you never know if there is a future artist that will work for us soon.

The Students

James (Team 2) from Film Production said: ‘The best thing about it was being able to do something free flowing and without protocol – we had to find equipment and props when and where we could – people bounced off our energy and helped us out.’

Danny from Foundation (Team 2) is hoping to continue at AUB on BA (Hons Films Production) and worked as soundman with his team. “I joined in to meet and work with new people – I had a bit of experience with sound but to collaborate with older students was really helpful. We swapped skills to make the best film we could in the time given.”

Petie from Illustration (Team 3) said: “The initial sharing of ideas was really interesting as we had to figure out how Illustration and Film could work together – we didn’t know a lot about each other disciplines but I think what we have made reflects what we all do really well.

The Judges

All films will be premiered at the festival on April 6th and also screened online. Filmmaker and festival founder Nicholas Jeune said: “It was fantastic to meet the teams setting out on the 24 hour film challenge. Undaunted by the time constraints, they rushed off to make the films that will be premiered at From Page to Screen 2014.”

Marek Budzynski (Senior Lecturer on BA Film Production) said: “The films were incredible feats –coming up with a story, shots and post production work in 24 hours was brilliant. The teams got the gist of the process and understood the brief really quickly. We all know hipsters, and the three films exposed hipsters for what they are in very different ways.”

AUB Students’ Union President Ben Musitano said: “It’s really important for courses to come together outside of specified units and work collaboratively on projects which emulate the creative industries they will all enter.”

AUB Twenty Four is the brainchild of Simon Pride, Head of Marketing and Communications at AUB, who previously worked at advertising agencies such as DDB, Euro RSCG and J Walter Thompson. His vision was to turn the University into a giant communications agency for 24 hours. He commented;

“When I first came to AUB, my overwhelming first impression was I’d walked into the largest creative department of any advertising agency in the world. Not only was creativity in evidence everywhere, but all the craft skills an agency employs were being taught and practiced on a daily basis – film making, events, graphic design, acting, costume, make up etc.  This project shines a spotlight on the educational philosophy at AUB – learning through practice, inter-disciplinary collaboration and strong industry links.”
