We caught up with BA (Hons) Animation Production Alumnus, Andrew Grisdale to find out what he’s been up to since graduating in 1997. Since he left Bournemouth Film School (BFS) he’s been asked by Pixar to work on some award winning and well known titles like Toy Story 3 and Cars 2.

Andrew is currently working as a Layout Artist for Pixar Animation Studios, based in California. Here’s what he said:

How did you find your time at Bournemouth Film School?

“I must say I have many wonderful memories of my time studying at BFS. I found it really fun and interesting to be surrounded by like-minded people for the first time in my life. I got the opportunity to work on some juicy projects and learn a lot from my teachers and fellow students. The facilities were good and the town was a great place to live. I was sad to have to leave.”

Why did you choose to study at BFS?

“It was a while ago now but I remember I asked my art teacher at the time what the best school for animation was, and he said Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design (the University’s name at the time) and so I went for it.

“After I left AUB I sent out just one demo reel. It went to a small video game studio in London and they called me in for an interview. A month later I was moving to London and I have been employed in animation ever since.”

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

“I think the moment I’m most proud of in my career was getting the call from Pixar asking me to go and work there. The studio is arguably the best in the world for animation so to get their attention was a grand marker for how far I’d come.

“So far Ive worked on three feature films that have been released – Toy Story 3, Cars 2, The Good Dinosaur. Two more in the pipeline!

“It was really a great privilege to get to work on a Toy Story film. I had just started at Pixar and was feeling very excited just to be there. It was so fun to get to work with those famous characters and to see so many of my own creative choices in the final film was really thrilling.  To have it be such a big hit and be nominated for best picture that year was really fantastic.

“I recently wrapped up my work on Finding Dory which the studio is readying for release in the summer. And I just started work on an original film called Coco. Its scheduled to be out in the autumn of 2017.”

Would you recommend BFS?

“I would readily recommend BFS to any young student interested in animation. The animation course at the university was just a fun place to go every day. Any student will learn a lot from the teachers and from their fellow students. Bournemouth is a lovely town to live in. I think anyone could have a great time down there on the south coast. Personally, I have a lot to thank AUB for.”

Andrew’s One Piece Of Advice

“Just love what you do and it won’t ever feel like work.”
