Over the past academic year, students from The Arts University Bournemouth have created some innovative, creative pieces of work that have been recognised at Award Ceremonies and by industry experts worldwide.
From Milan Abad’s Illustration work being selected for The Ting Tings new album cover in March, to Film Production students winning four awards at the Kodak Student Commercial Awards in May; it has been a busy year with some great outcomes. Below is a round-up of the most recent successes for our talented students, highlighting their innovative designs and their unique talent in such a competitive creative environment.
In April 2012 Masters of Architecture student David McCarthy had his design chosen as the winner of the Socio Design Foundation’s Wearable Architecture competition, ‘Between Architecture and Haute Couture’. The competition is a design concept that asks students to submit an architectural, spatial response through a single vignette. David designed an apparatus for seeing the world from a different angle.
Commercial Photography graduate Roman Sakovich won the 2012 IdeasTap Photographic Award which included a cash prize of £5,000 and an internship in New York. Roman’s project was about how small countries are influenced by bigger nations and unions like the Soviet Union and the EU, and how they construct the country and shape its culture. His photography ‘stunned the judges with the sophistication of [his] image’.
Illustration students Emily Hughes and Maria Midttun won second place and highly commended (respectively) in the prestigious Macmillan Prize 2012. The award was established by Macmillan Children’s Books in order to stimulate new work from young illustrators in art schools and to help them start their professional lives. It is among the most prestigious awards in children’s book illustration, comprising some of the most innovative, imaginative and outstanding new talent working in the field today. The judging panel included leading contemporary children’s book illustrators, an experienced children’s bookseller, the Publishing Director for Illustrated Publishing at Macmillan Children’s Books, the Children’s Art Director and the Pan Macmillan Digital Director.
Emily, who met with industry specialists at the Awards Ceremony including art directors, commissioners and editors commented in her blog “I was very very nervous in the midst of such important people in the industry, as well as amazing illustrators Emily Gravett and Polly Dunbar, (but) all in all I had an amazing time…I feel more enthused and motivated to keep illustrating…It’s been a great push, and a great way to dot the end of my student life.” In addition, Emily was awarded £500 for her winning work.
Foundation Diploma student Danielle Cain has won £500 in a competition run by Eneco Windfarm Company to design a visual identity for the proposed Navitus Bay Wind Park. Talented young artists and designers from across Dorset, the New Forest and on the Isle of Wight were asked to use their artistic skills to submit a logo which they feel best represents the project. The logo submitted by Danni was the clear winner in the eyes of the judges, who thought that her entry was not only highly creative, but also reflected the brief submitted to entrants beforehand.
Danni commented “I’m delighted that my design has been chosen as the new logo for Navitus Bay. I love the look of wind farms and actually based my design on the shape and movement of the turbines. I firmly believe in renewable energy and feel that wind farms can be very beneficial to the region and the UK.”
Chris Sherrington, Project Director for Navitus Bay, said, “The whole team was unanimous in selecting Danni’s design as the winning logo and we were very impressed with the creativity and thought given to it. The new logo is another important milestone in the lifetime of the project and we look forward to it being used throughout the development period and beyond.”
Graduate Animation film ‘A Life Well-Seasoned’ was awarded 1st prize in the ‘Country Award’ category at the Hamburg Animation awards. The Director Dan Rieley was present to in Hamburg to receive this Award for Best Animated Newcomer from Great Britain.”
In April the AUB went green when we were ranked in the top five non-commercial unions in the NUS Green Impact Students’ Union Awards. We were also awarded a 2:1 in the People and Planet Green League for our environmental and ethical performance – a great result for the AUB.
In June, Fashion Studies student Ke Li’s designs were published in the British Airways ‘High Life’ magazine in an article based on renowned fashion journalist Hilary Alexander’s ‘Secret Seven to Watch’ at London Graduate Fashion Week (LGFW). In addition, four Fashion Studies students were nominated for LGFW Awards including Ke Li for the George Gold Award; Ellis Currie for the Mulberry Accessories Award; Rebekah Mills for the Fashion Innovation award; and the whole Fashion Studies team for the Stand Design Award.
At the first HE Summer Show Private View for our Make-Up for Media and Performance course, renowned special effects make-up specialist Nick Dudman presented the ‘Make-Up student of the Year Award’ to graduating student Ria Marshall. Oscar nominee Nick, who has worked on all of the Harry Potter films handed the award to Ria for her innovation and contribution to her make-up practice. In addition to the award, Ria was awarded with make-up and prosthetic goodies worth £500 from Mouldlife.
Graphic Design students have had a good summer so far, starting with student Pete Smart’s website being awarded the 18th most visited site worldwide for one week in May on the Design Charts website. Pete’s website ‘50 Problems in 50 Days’ attempts to explore the limits of design’s ability to solve social problems using design (http://50problems50days.com/)
Final year Graphic Design students Matthew Sid-Ahmad and Ingunn Berg Hjelle received commendations – the highest award – in the national 2011/2012 YCN Student Awards competition. This is the first time AUB Graphic Design students have entered this competition. The Awards were set up to showcase emerging creative excellence and are based on a collection of live creative briefs. Matthew was commended for his work in the ESPN brief, while Ingunn received a commendation for her designs for the Swarovski brief.
At the D&AD New Blood exhibition at the end of June, Graphic Design students James Isbell, James Smith, Malin Hassel and Tinna Hallsdottir walked away with Best of Year Awards for their design work in different categories including Typography and Graphic Design, with fellow student Chris Nuelle receiving a coveted Yellow Pencil Award for Advertising. Illustration student Natasha Durley also received a Best of Year Award for her innovative designs.
Film Production graduate David Stoddart broadcast his directorial debut at the beginning of July and his original drama ‘New Cross’ was being shown as part of Channel Four’s Coming Up series which showcases the talents of new writers and directors. Also in July, Film Production graduates David Giles, Duncan Paterson followed fellow graduate Emma Johnson into the industry as part of the Skillset Trainee Scheme, which is designed to kick-start a graduates career in their chosen industry through a year’s placement. All three graduates will be first in line for trainee roles on major feature films to be shot in the UK during 2012/13 and will benefit from on screen credits and assisted in their career progression.
The Costume with Performance Design course were presented with awards for their work in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the Podium Awards which recognise the vital role universities have played in delivering the London 2012 Games.
MA student Sarah Dicks and the Battle for the Winds project won a Silver medal in the Award for Best Creative Cultural Project, and the Breathe project won a Bronze medal in the Award for Most Successful Student Led Activity. In addition,Costume student Julia Joyes won Best Costume at the Prime Cuts Festival, which is part of Free Range and fellow Costume student Caroline Hall was runner up in The Patterns of Fashion Costume Society Award.
Commercial Photography graduate Joseph Fox won The Times – Eureka Young Photographer of the Year Award with his project which focused on the eroding coastline of a village in Norfolk. These Awards are a celebration of creativity. Young readers are encouraged to engage with science by creating original photography and film that would help to make science, technology and the environment come alive. Judges included Jon Jones, Director of Photography at the Sunday Times Magazine, Jim al-Khalili, physicist, author and broadcaster, Giles Revell, award-winning artist and photographer and Rose Taylor, Picture Editor at Science Photo Library.
Four students from Commercial Photography and two students from Photography were shortlisted for the Association of Photography Student Awards, which are one of the most highly regarded awards at this level. Photography student Fiona Walker was awarded the Judges Choice for her photograph in the Landscape, Interiors and Exteriors category.
At the Modelmaking degree show New Blades in London in June, AUB Modelmaking students walked away with four of the ten awards handed out on the night including Best of Show Runner Up for Kate Arthur; Best Architectural Model for Tom Taylor; Best Sculpture for Stuart Wiggins; and Best Application of New Technology for Courtney Cornelius.
Also in June, the AUB Marketing Team won the HEIST Gold Award for Best Use of Innovation and Creative Thinking for the Open Days that Open Doors campaign where urban artist ‘Soap’ created a live art happening, spray painting a billboard to advertise Open Days to great success.
Finally, the AUB was in the top five of all universities across England in the 2012 Destination for Leavers in Higher Education Survey, with almost 98% of our Class of 2011 graduates in work or further study six months after graduating.
Following a busy few months, the AUB is now making preparations for the start of the new 2012/13 academic year, with a number of building works being undertaken to improve the facilities in the AUB to ensure we offer every student the best environment in which to study. In addition the AUB is preparing to become the Arts University Bournemouth (AUB), following the Government’s decision to remove the number criterion for university title June 2012. the AUB will officially become the AUB later in the year.
