Semester Study Abroad courses are for students and professionals who wish to spend time abroad, developing their creative skills and gaining credits towards their university degree, but do not necessarily want to spend 2-3 years in another country. Students are fully integrated with our BA (Hons) students in an exciting, creative University environment.
Whether your interests lie in design, merchandising, buying or technical disciplines, this Semester Study Abroad Fashion Design and Technology course provides a realistic insight into the variety of career possibilities in the fashion industry.
You will be introduced to pattern cutting, design and construction through a programme of practical workshops and studio-based teaching. You will primarily be concerned with womenswear and menswear including draping, illustration, deconstruction and embellishment.

You will also be given the opportunity to produce finished toiles; demonstrating the skills and techniques learnt. You will produce a computer-generated pattern from which you will construct a basic garment. This will be presented alongside the pattern supported by specifications sheets and flat CAD drawings. You will also explore merchandising principles and will develop analytical, numerical and statistical skills for buying and merchandising within the industry.
You will also explore a diversity of creative areas drawing upon a developed knowledge of textiles, fibre optic displays, paintings, drawings, illustrative and photographic imagery, in order to support representation and interpretation. You will identify a current fashion-related exhibition, located within a gallery, museum or public context, and appropriate research-based visits will be supported, sourced either on a local, national or international basis.

You will be given the opportunity to plan and develop the solution to a ‘live’ or simulated professional brief and have the opportunity to produce the practical work required to the highest professional standard.
