Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP)
The Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) is located in the library. MoDiP’s purpose is to increase understanding and appreciation of the use and significance of plastics in design during the 20th and 21st centuries.
MoDiP provides a dynamic study and research resource to facilitate an understanding and appreciation of popular design and culture. It was created to enhance research and student learning and holds approximately 9000 items of international, historical and contemporary design examples in it’s Plastics and Studio Collections.
Established as the Design collection in 1988, the Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) became a registered museum in 2001. It offers a unique study, teaching and reference resource primarily for use by researchers, and the staff and students of Arts University Bournemouth.
MoDiP comprises a Plastics collection and the Studio collection.
The main focus of the MoDiP collection is plastics. It ranges from Bakelite to bio-degradable corn-starch examples and includes design classics such as Raymond Loewy’s Purma Special Camera, Philippe Starck’s ‘La Marie’ chair and Tom Dixon’s ‘Jack Lights’. It also has an extensive collection of everyday items of popular culture. The plastics collection forms the basis of a specialist research resource offered by the University.
MoDiP offers a diverse collection of 20th and 21st century items of everyday design including: fashion, beauty and costume, electrical items, newspapers and magazines, packaging, printed ephemera, ceramics & glassware, toys and games.
